Why did you choose Cornell and AAP?
What really drew me to Cornell was the challenge of being part of a student body that has a drive for success and is constantly engaged in pursuing their passions. I wanted to be a part of a community that embraces and motivates each other to continually strive for more, and that is exactly what Cornell provides.
My parents did not have the opportunity to attend college, so it is a dream come true for me to attend Cornell. I worked hard to succeed in high school, and I knew that Cornell would not only provide me with a world-class education, but also allow me to develop as a person. Cornell has allowed me to push the envelope with my own work and to think in ways that I could never before have imagined. I have had the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and develop with like-minded, hardworking, and creative individuals. This has helped me to become a better artist and designer, and it is helping me mature into the creative trailblazer that I always dreamed of becoming. Cornell has exposed me to numerous research opportunities, projects, organizations, amazing faculty, courses, and careers, which have opened so many new doors for exploration, experiences, and a future of even more possibilities. It amazes me each and every day. As I navigate my education, Cornell, and specifically AAP, is making my dreams into a reality .
What experiences have contributed to your sense of belonging at AAP?
Finding creative spaces and communities has allowed me to find more purpose on campus. Living in Ujamaa Residential College during my first year also helped me to feel less out of place. Cornell is very different from home and came with many new experiences and challenges. Having a supportive community and seeing other students who shared similar backgrounds, stories, and experiences helped me adjust.
What are your extracurricular interests and how have you incorporated them into your college life?
As a creative person, I continued to pursue any and everything related to art and design. I have been a part of Thread magazine for more than a year and this upcoming semester I will be the new creative director. I enjoy finding ways to share my creative vision and voice as an artist with the rest of the world. I am an executive board member of Collective X Liberation, another publication that is creating an artistic platform for voices that have gone unheard for far too long. In addition, I participated in two art shows during Miami Art Week: Imagination Land: Fantastical Narratives and Searching at PULSE Art Fair.
I am also a member of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS). I had the opportunity to attend the 2017 national conference in Houston and participate in the student design competition with a team of seven other Cornell students.
What do you hope to accomplish during your time at AAP and after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to start my own design firm and creative consulting business. I want to continue learning, developing, and sharing my creativity as I navigate my career.
